Years ago, I started working with Skin Deep Magazine. They were always kind and positive with their features, even giving me a two issue spread one year to let me ramble on about the positive impact tattooing can have on our community. I have always been grateful that they gave me the opportunity to say all the things I wanted to say, even when they seemed to go off the subject of tattooing and venture into activism. A few weeks ago, I received an email from Sion Smith, the magazine’s editor. He was very encouraging about the Serpents of Bienville project, and mentioned his interest in our “Transformative Tattoo” series. We spoke back and forth, exchanging ideas and thoughts, all shaping what is now the “Transformative Tattoo” series you can find monthly in Skin Deep Magazine starting this month. Every month I will bring a new feature, some based on the blog, rewritten with new stories, details and more. I am so grateful and excited to get to work with Sion and write for Skin Deep. He and I are working hard to create a quality article that will bring to the audience a side of tattooing that is not normally shown, one of healing and transformation. We hope you enjoy.
From Skin Deep Magazine:
"Starting in August 2016, Skin Deep tattoo magazine is proud to announce a unique collaboration with Sean Herman and his Serpents of Bienville project. In an ongoing monthly series, the magazine will be publishing Sean’s thoughts as he looks at tattooing from the unique angle of how the tattoo can transform those who succumb to its magic."
Editor, Sion Smith offers this:
“We first worked with Sean a few years ago and when you become friends with artists whose work you rate, it’s easy steps from there to figure out how you can work together to contribute more to the tattoo world than simply publishing images of great tattoos. Having read some of Sean’s articles at Serpents of Bienville, it didn’t take me long (maybe 20 seconds) to figure out that if we put our heads together, we could get these important messages out to a wider audience than ever - and they are important. Any stories that make the human experience a little less isolated are worth their weight in gold, but if you can expand that into the realm of the tattooed human experience, even better.”
Skin Deep magazine is the best selling tattoo magazine in the UK and has a highly respected reach throughout the world. You can find the magazine at the following places:

Sion is also our newest contributor to the Serpents of Bienville collective, bringing us an amazing blog series entitled “Beautiful Creatures” starting at the end of this month. Make sure to check back regularly to check out his amazing stories about the artists that created monsters and creatures throughout history. We are excited and grateful to Sion for his involvement.
