I am proud to announce the opening of the Serpents of Bienville Art Gallery in downtown Daphne, Alabama. We started the Serpents of Bienville project a little over 6 months ago and have watched it grow more quickly than we could have imagined. Inspired by our Southern Storytelling roots, we wanted to create a project that could reflect and preserve that experience. Beginning with illustrations, we then moved into the form of multimedia online and have been continually blogging and updating social media sites with stories and lore from around Alabama. Adding new contributors like Vernon Hightower, we have been inspired more than ever to continue to ride the river and see where it takes us. The opening of the gallery is a beautiful next step.
We wanted to begin with having a gallery, one that will have an ever rotating gallery, focused and filled with work created by local artists. We will do shows regularly, filling the gallery with new artists work, along with keeping the staple work that is the Serpents of Bienville. We will be featuring all forms of work, from two dimensional paintings, to three dimensional glass art, to mixed media assemblage pieces. We are excited about the artists that we already have aboard, and can't wait to add more. Here are some more pictures of the gallery space, including photography by my wife and myself.
We will also be doing book readings at the gallery, along with story telling events. We at the Serpents of Bienville will be bringing you the best Southern Storytellers, along with having the most important featured storyteller, YOU! These events will be organized around a primary theme, tying all the stories together. They will be recorded and rebroadcast as podcasts through this website, for those of you who are not in the area to be able to enjoy. We are also in the process of putting together a five episode podcast series, but that will be something we talk about later.
In the back of the space we have a small, ever growing, museum set up for you to check out. We feature photography from the area that dates as far back as the late 1800's to early 1900's. We also have map prints from as far back as the 1700's. We are working on getting more artifacts in, like these pieces of pottery from Stedman's Landing that were through about when the Hurricane of 1916 came through and destroyed the wharf. We are also excited to bring local documentaries, and local music, playing continually throughout the museum area. The museum is also home to some 200 books that are about our beautiful area. From ghost stories, to folk lore, to history, these book are there for your enjoyment, to read and share while you are experiencing the Serpents of Bienville Gallery. If you're interested in purchasing copies of any books feel free to let us know! Here are some more pictures of some of the exhibits we have in the museum.
You can also find all the new work we have been working on for you guys to enjoy. We now offer photo prints from photography done by my wife, Amanda Herman, and myself. We have been taking photos of all the different cemeteries, ancient live oaks, and water fronts we have been traveling to. They are all featured in the front area in the gallery, all available for you to take home. Postcards are also available from these pictures, and can be currently purchased either at the gallery or on this website. At the gallery we also now have prints of old local maps, poster size, for you to enjoy and hang in your own house.
We are excited for the things to come, and so grateful to the wonderful city of Daphne. They have been incredibly supportive and helpful every step of the way, even making visits to the galleries opening. All that is missing is YOU! We would love to see you here, share some stories with you, and show you old photos from the days past. If it's our Storytelling Events, or Gallery Openings, or just a Tuesday afternoon, we would love to see you at the Serpents of Bienville Art Gallery.
We are located at 1800B Main Street, Daphne, Alabama.
Hope to see you soon!
